Accra, August 3, GNA - Harry Amponsah, a 34-year-old man who set himself ablaze to prevent arrest, Tuesday, died at the Police Hospital, where he was being treated for his burns.
Harry, suspected to be mentally ill, was being arrested for inflicting matchete wounds on his father, at Santa Maria, a suburb of Accra.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mrs Effia Tenge, Head of Public Affairs Unit of the Accra Regional Police Command, told the media that the Odorkor Police received a complaint from the father of the deceased, on Saturday, July 31, 2021.
According to him, Harry had attacked him with a cutlass and inflicted wounds on his left arm.
Consequently, on Tuesday, August 3, Harry's father led the Police to his house to arrest his son after he had returned from the hospital where he was receiving treatment.
However, Harry upon seeing the Police, quickly entered his room and locked the door.
DSP Tenge said the Police suddenly saw smoke emanating from his room.
When the door was forcibly opened, he was found on his bed ablaze with a deep knife wound in his stomach.
The fire was quenched and he was, subsequently, rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment.
