Captain Sergio Ramos to leave Real Madrid after 16 years

Berlin, June 17, (dpa/GNA) - Captain Sergio Ramos is set to announce his departure from Real Madrid on Thursday, the Spanish top club have said.

Real said on their website on Wednesday that "an institutional act of tribute and farewell to our captain Sergio Ramos will be held, which will be attended by our president Florentino Pérez."

A news conference with Ramos was also scheduled for Thursday.

The contract of the 35-year-old centre-back Ramos expires at the end of the month.

Real were reportedly only ready to give him a one-year renewal plus a 10 per cent salary cut while Ramos was said to have sought a two-year extension.

He arrived at Real 16 years ago from Sevilla and won 22 titles with them, including four Champions Leagues and Club World Cups each, five La Liga titles and two Spanish Cups.

Ramos also has 180 Spain caps highlighted by titles at the 2010 World Cup Euros 2008 and 2012.

But he was plagued by injuries lately, not nominated for Euro 2020 and also not first choice in the end at Real.
